Happy Easter!

I was fortunate enough to get a glimpse of the rare Westie rabbit today.

It is a truly rare and wonderful creature although this particular one looks as if it has been grubbing about in the mud.

Keep Clam!

Zeus is itchy.

It’s his yearly Autumn Itch.

So I bought him some itch relief stuff.

Let’s read the bottle..let me see..we have

Deep skin cleansing….splendid, that’s much better than shallow skin cleansing.

Complete body cleanser..even better, not much point only cleaning part of it.

Soothes ….great stuff, nothing better than a soothing soothe.

Clams.. sure a good clam is..What?…I mean..Pardon?

Hmmm..Yup that’s what it says..

Soothes and clams…

I’ve never had my dog clammed before.

Shellfish of me I know.

I wonder if it’s good for his mussels?

Happy Turtle Day!

We recently saw a few of our reptilian friends at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa.

This one in particular seemed glad to see us.

Such a nice smile!

turtlesmile.

These ones were lazing about on the boat launch railings. I’m guessing they were trying to get somebody to take them out on the big boats. Turtles love yachting.

These ones were having a spa day complete with mud baths and natural moss scrubs.

This one appears to be stuck.

His friend seemed to find that amusing. Turtles are like that.

This is a green sea turtle who was rescued. The blue bean bag thing is a weight pack/buoyancy device which helps her swim. She was hit by a boat and her back flippers are partially paralyzed.

Squirrel!

There once was a cheeky squirrel

who was driving my poor dog mad

He mocked and he laughed and he chortled

Oh! He was such a cad.

He used diabolic acrobatics

To show me his tummy bare

Hanging about on the feeder

He masticated without a care.

And yet he is saved from my revenge

By a fact of no dispute

Thief and bandit he may be

But aw look, he’s just so cute!

May the Dog be with you.

If you haven’t heard, it’s been a mite chilly out.

I know, I know, it’s shocking news.

I’m sorry I had to break it to you like that.

Personally I don’t mind the cold or snow.

Especially when a walk around my neighborhood looks like this.

tree_snow_winter_cold.

maple_tree_winter_snow.

tree_snow_branches_winter.

tree_fir_winter_snow.

I must admit, it is a bit rough to have this much snow and a white dog.

white_dog_snow_westie.

Of course when temperatures drop into the frostpaw levels, the dogs need to mostly stay inside.

Sometimes when I try to make them go outside even when it’s not that cold out, they simply vanish into thin air.

I don’t  know how that happens.

zeus_lab_starwars..

Hmmmm.

It’s a mystery.

I recently made a bunch of ATC’s  of animals for a trade.

ATC’s are artist trading cards. They are 3.5 by 2.5 inches, the size of a regular playing card.

These are in acrylic.

They will most likely appear larger on your screen then they are in real life.

Christmas Trees, Peeping Toms and Dog Portraits

It’s that time of year again.

Dummy was so excited to decorate the tree, he forgot to put his pants on.

He thinks he’s sexy.

No wonder we have so many peeping Toms.

But I know what you did..

Sampson, I can’t believe you let them get that close to the house.

What do you have to say for yourself?

Really!

And to think, I made a portrait, just for you.

There he is!

I’m serious there is a hummingbird in that apple tree.

Mmmm, that apple tree smelled delicious.

This painting was for a friend. It’s 11 x 14 inches, acrylic on canvas.

And this acrylic, 4×4 inches is of a friend’s dog.

He made this face right after he nipped at my husband.

He’s working on not nipping and this face made me laugh!

How to take a selfie.

Zeus tells me that selfies are all the rage.

As he is so obsessed, I decided to give him a few guidelines.

Sit! Stay! Read!

1) Know your good side. Everyone has a certain angle that makes them look great.

But watch your expression, a little whale eye goes a long way.

Zeusselfie6©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

2) The eyes are the window to the soul so work those babies.

Zeusselfie1©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

3) Highlight your best feature. Zeus is unusually fond of his nose.

Zeusselfie4©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

4)  Use the cropping tool to make a dramatic yet strangely coy statement.

Zeusselfie3©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

6) Add a filter. Resist the urge to overuse filters though. I know some people who use so many filters, that even though I’ve seen dozens of photos of them, I don’t actually know what they look like.

Zeusselfie2©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

Well I hope those are helpful.

A final word to the wise, letting your furry pal borrow your phone for a few selfies is one thing but for the love of dog don’t let him download apps especially if they, like Zeus, are a bird dog and they find out about those games with the extremely vexed birds throwing themselves at thieving porcines.

Trust me, you will never get your phone back.

Sigh.

Have a good one.

Mudzilla!

(with my apologies to the Blue Oyster Cult)

.

Deep from the depths of the backyard, a savage creature awaits, stalking, sniffing

…chasing tennis balls…

The day comes when he pounces…

mudzilla1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

.

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound

He’s a mole sniffing muck digging grimy hound

Eastern moles who think he’s a pain

Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a clod and he throws it back down

As he digs through mole tunnels underground

.

Oh no! They says he’s got to go

Go! Go! Mudzilla!

Oh no! There goes the mole’s burrow!

Go! Go! Mudzilla!

History shows again and again how Sammy harasses the moles’ clan.

Mudzilla!!

History shows oh man, how I have to wash the dog again and again!

Mudzilla!

Meanwhile in between washing the dog and refilling large holes in the yard I painted these little landscapes for a trade. These are all acrylic and 2.5 by 3.5 inches (the size of a playing card).

Disclaimer: No moles were harmed in the making of this and in fact they are currently digging up the back yard while giggling themselves silly over the foolishness of any one trying to outdig them..

Oops..

I’m just kidding, my husband saved this one from the lawn mower and put him back safely.

(He is sooooo soft!)
