Keep Clam!

Zeus is itchy.

It’s his yearly Autumn Itch.

So I bought him some itch relief stuff.

Let’s read the bottle..let me see..we have

Deep skin cleansing….splendid, that’s much better than shallow skin cleansing.

Complete body cleanser..even better, not much point only cleaning part of it.

Soothes ….great stuff, nothing better than a soothing soothe.

Clams.. sure a good clam is..What?…I mean..Pardon?

Hmmm..Yup that’s what it says..

Soothes and clams…

I’ve never had my dog clammed before.

Shellfish of me I know.

I wonder if it’s good for his mussels?

Public Service Announcement

This is a public service announcement.

Stop it!

It looks ridiculous.

Much as I appreciate the art of meditation that doesn’t look much better.

Happy Turtle Day!

We recently saw a few of our reptilian friends at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa.

This one in particular seemed glad to see us.

Such a nice smile!

These ones were lazing about on the boat launch railings. I’m guessing they were trying to get somebody to take them out on the big boats. Turtles love yachting.

These ones were having a spa day complete with mud baths and natural moss scrubs.

This one appears to be stuck.

His friend seemed to find that amusing. Turtles are like that.

This is a green sea turtle who was rescued. The blue bean bag thing is a weight pack/buoyancy device which helps her swim. She was hit by a boat and her back flippers are partially paralyzed.

This is an octopus.

This is a quickie sketch of a house in town. 4×6 inches.

This an acrylic painting of a mason jar from a lesson in the book “50 Small Paintings” by Mark Daniel Nelson, a great book for everyone from beginners to professional and all in between. 4×6 inches.

Christmas Trees, Peeping Toms and Dog Portraits

It’s that time of year again.

Dummy was so excited to decorate the tree, he forgot to put his pants on.

He thinks he’s sexy.

No wonder we have so many peeping Toms.

Yeah, I see you Tom Turkey.

That’s right, strut away all casual like.

But I know what you did..

Sampson, I can’t believe you let them get that close to the house.

What do you have to say for yourself?

And to think, I made a portrait, just for you.

Acrylic, 8×10

Don’t worry Zeus, I made you one too.

Acrylic, 8×10

What do you think of that, Zeus?

Here’s a couple little landscapes too. Acrylic, 3×5

How to take a selfie.

Zeus tells me that selfies are all the rage.

As he is so obsessed, I decided to give him a few guidelines.

Sit! Stay! Read!

1) Know your good side. Everyone has a certain angle that makes them look great.

But watch your expression, a little whale eye goes a long way.

Zeusselfie6©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

2) The eyes are the window to the soul so work those babies.

Zeusselfie1©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

3) Highlight your best feature. Zeus is unusually fond of his nose.

Zeusselfie4©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

4)  Use the cropping tool to make a dramatic yet strangely coy statement.

Zeusselfie3©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

6) Add a filter. Resist the urge to overuse filters though. I know some people who use so many filters, that even though I’ve seen dozens of photos of them, I don’t actually know what they look like.

Zeusselfie2©Virginia Spencer, 2014.

Well I hope those are helpful.

A final word to the wise, letting your furry pal borrow your phone for a few selfies is one thing but for the love of dog don’t let him download apps especially if they, like Zeus, are a bird dog and they find out about those games with the extremely vexed birds throwing themselves at thieving porcines.

Trust me, you will never get your phone back.

Have a good one.

Baby, it’s cold outside..

Things to do when it’s cold.

You can watch the sunrise.

Then run amok and do handstands.

You could play Charades!!

(Here Sampson is acting out a scene from the movie “Tremors”.
He’s a huge Kevin Bacon fan.
Mostly because his name is Bacon.)

Or dance the Tarantella.

(with my apologies to the Blue Oyster Cult)

Deep from the depths of the backyard, a savage creature awaits, stalking, sniffing

…chasing tennis balls…

The day comes when he pounces…

mudzilla1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound

He’s a mole sniffing muck digging grimy hound

Eastern moles who think he’s a pain

Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a clod and he throws it back down

As he digs through mole tunnels underground

Oh no! They says he’s got to go

Go! Go! Mudzilla!

Oh no! There goes the mole’s burrow!

Go! Go! Mudzilla!

History shows again and again how Sammy harasses the moles’ clan.

History shows oh man, how I have to wash the dog again and again!

mudzilla3©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Meanwhile in between washing the dog and refilling large holes in the yard I painted these little landscapes for a trade. These are all acrylic and 2.5 by 3.5 inches (the size of a playing card).

Disclaimer: No moles were harmed in the making of this and in fact they are currently digging up the back yard while giggling themselves silly over the foolishness of any one trying to outdig them..

I’m just kidding, my husband saved this one from the lawn mower and put him back safely.

(He is sooooo soft!)

It’s been awhile…

But this is what I’ve done so far with my summer.

I was sidetracked for a bit by a large monster.

It said ” Rawrrrrrrr, Rawrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, RAWRRR!!!”

cicada©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Which is for monsterspeak for

“Help! I’m stuck!!”

And he struggled back and forth..

“Rawwwrrrrr, rawwwrrrrrr! RAWRRRR!!!”

Translation: “Hmmm. Maybe if I lean a bit and put one leg down and rock back and forth…”

cicada2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013

Translation: “Okay, I’m out, it’s all good”

cicada3©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013

And then he sheepishly crawled away.

Even the hummingbird did a dance for him.

“I’m so HAPPY!!”

happy1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

While the grumpy hummingbird rolled his eyes..

humm1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Then I saw a butterfly..

butterfly©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

And “Marine One” flew the President over my house.

pres1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

So I painted this in acrylic for a WetCanvas Paint Along.

stilllife1©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

And I bought a new Bic pen so I did some quick doodling.

doodle2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Other then that, there’s not much going on. Though I did let Zeus and Sampson watch Sharknado and now they’re making their own film called “Dognado”. Zeus, as the art director of the film, thought the garden looked too fruitful so he promptly picked all the tomatoes.

Yes, I have no tomatoes.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Having a Hitchcock moment…

Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen…

The scene is set. An isolated farmhouse before the storm.

A ladder leaning against a lone tree.

Here a heedless harpy harangues her hapless husband.

The husband, his soul pierced by a thousand verbal barbs, slouches over his basement work table and slowly twists a rope over and over.

And as the skies darken, faint thunder is heard rolling across the barren landscape. The basement stairs creak as the man heavily climbs them with the rope in his hands.

Twisting, twisting….

house2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Meanwhile a lone eagle flies over a railroad span.

The river rages below.

The wind whips through the trees. A light mist settles.

A ravenous troll lurks below the bridge as a footsteps of a young goat rings out.

Clip. Clop. Clip. Clop. Clip…

Oh sorry Sampson, didn’t mean to scare you. Thank you Zeus for covering his eyes. Sammy is a bit nervy at times. He also needs a bath..

Sammy2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013

Why don’t you guys go and chase some birds?

Oh I see. Yes, that is an awful lot of birds.

A Hitchcockian amount of birds, one might say.

birds2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013

Where’s an eagle when you need one?

There he is!

eagle9©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013.

Now, where was I? I was going somewhere with this Hitchcock stuff.

Never mind, I’ve lost it. Here, look at a photo of Zeus chasing his nose.

Yup, that’s what he’s doing. Don’t worry though, he didn’t catch it.

Zeus2©Virginia Spencer, thepurpledogpaintingblog, 2013

Well. I guess I should quit messing around with the camera and go paint something.

Till we meet again..
